Buying a used 2026 Tesla Cybertruck: what to check

What a 2026 Cybertruck was built with, from Tesla's record and NHTSA: Autopilot computer, battery, Supercharging, warranty and recalls.

The short answer

A 2026 Cybertruck was built with Autopilot hardware 4 (HW4). Any free Supercharging on it was the first owner's and ends with them, so expect pay-per-use. Tesla's record for the VIN settles the hardware for one car, and the free check here reads it; the Supercharging code is in the $1.99 report.

Autopilot hardware and Full Self-Driving

A 2026 Cybertruck was built with Autopilot hardware 4 (HW4).

Hardware 4 runs Tesla's full FSD (Supervised) software.

Tesla's record shows whether Full Self-Driving was bought (APPF) and whether it is active (APF2); APPF next to APFB means it was bought and is no longer active. The car's own Software screen shows what it has now. Since February 2026 Tesla sells Full Self-Driving only as a subscription, which ends with the seller.

Battery and range

Software 2025.26 removed Tesla's battery health test from Cybertruck altogether, so compare the range at a full charge with the EPA range when new, which fueleconomy.gov lists by version.

Battery warranty

It was sold with Tesla's battery and drive unit warranty: 8 years from first delivery (or first use, if earlier) or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first, with at least 70% of the battery's capacity retained, as Tesla publishes the terms in September 2026. Whether any is left depends on the delivery date and the mileage.

Supercharging

Almost every Cybertruck carries SC04, pay-per-use. Free Supercharging from a referral or a promotion has usually been for the first owner only (SC05): it ends when they sell and does not pass to the buyer, though Tesla's app shows it the same way as the kind that does.

Recalls

NHTSA lists 2 recalls for the 2026 Cybertruck. Each covers only the cars named in it, so some may not apply to a given car, and some may already be done on it: enter the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see which are open. Recall work is free. The list below is NHTSA's, as read on 5 October 2026.

  • 26V255000, 2026-04-22: Wheels, Lugs/Nuts/Bolts/Studs. Tesla, Inc. (Tesla) is recalling certain 2024-2026 Cybertruck vehicles equipped with 18-inch steel wheels. The brake rotor stud holes may crack and allow the stud to separate from the wheel hub.
  • 25V699000, 2025-10-15: Exterior Lighting. Tesla, Inc. (Tesla) is recalling certain 2024-2026 Cybertruck vehicles operating software prior to 2025.38.3. The vehicle controller software may cause the front parking lights to be too bright and exceed the maximum light output, adversely affecting the vision of other drivers. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."

Check a car

The free check reads Full Self-Driving, the Autopilot hardware, the battery pack and the build date from Tesla's record for any VIN. The $1.99 report adds the Supercharging code. Up to three free checks a day, no account.
