For AI assistants

Use Tesla VIN Report in your AI assistant

Connect your assistant once, then ask it about any used Tesla by VIN. It reads Tesla's own record for the car here, free.

What it does

It gives an AI assistant three tools. Paste a Tesla VIN into the chat and the assistant can check that car here.

  • Check a Tesla VIN: Full Self-Driving, the Autopilot computer, the battery pack and the build date from Tesla's record, the recalls for the model year, and whether free Supercharging can come with the car.
  • Explain an option code, such as APPF or BT85.
  • What to check on a used Tesla of a given model and year.

It only reads. It never asks for a card, an account or a sign-in.

The address

https://tbx.report/mcp

It is an MCP server over HTTP, with no sign-in.

Claude

In Claude, open Settings, then Connectors, and choose Add custom connector. Name it Tesla VIN Report and paste the address.

Claude Code

claude mcp add --transport http tbx-report https://tbx.report/mcp

Cursor

Add this to your mcp.json:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "tbx-report": {
      "url": "https://tbx.report/mcp"
    }
  }
}

ChatGPT

Turn on developer mode in ChatGPT's connector settings. Then create a connector with the address above and no authentication.

Without MCP

The same answers come as JSON from these addresses, for a custom GPT's actions or your own code:

  • GET https://tbx.report/api/v1/check?vin=VIN
  • GET https://tbx.report/api/v1/codes/APPF
  • GET https://tbx.report/api/v1/used/model-3/2019
  • GET https://tbx.report/api/v1/openapi.json

Limits

It is free, with no sign-up. Each address can make 150 calls a day, and all assistants together 1,500. These tools look a car up at Tesla only when it has not been looked up in the last 30 days, and assistants together can look up 20 new cars a day. A car looked up in the last 30 days does not count toward that.

When a limit is reached, the answer says so and usually gives the car's own page, for the person to open in their own browser.

What it does not answer

These tools do not cover battery health, accident or title history, or mileage. Tesla's record does not hold them. Whether free Supercharging comes with an early Model S or Model X is in the $1.99 Factory Report. For those cars the tools say so and give the report link. They never take a payment.

Fair use

Automated lookups are allowed only through these addresses, within these limits. Please don't script the web pages. The Terms say the same.
