Frequently asked questions
What each report tells you, what a credit buys, and what Tesla's record cannot tell you.
The reports
What is the difference between Free, Basic and Pro?
Free answers the Full Self-Driving question from Tesla's record, with the battery pack, build date and public VIN data, up to three lookups a day. Basic, the $1.99 Factory Report, adds whether this car can have free Supercharging and how likely it is, and every factory option code, explained where known, with a PDF and a permanent link. Pro, the $9.99 Live Diagnostic, reads the car itself with its owner's approval.
Does it work on a car I don't own yet?
Yes. Free and Basic need only the VIN, so the listing is enough: tbx.report/decode?vin=VIN opens its check. Pro needs the owner's approval.
How is the report delivered?
Instantly, as a page at a permanent link with a PDF, and by email if you give an address at checkout.
What if Tesla has no factory record for my VIN?
No report is made and you are refunded automatically; a credit or a free report goes back to your account.
Can I get my money back?
Yes. Automatically if Tesla's record cannot be read. If a report is wrong, or you bought one for the wrong VIN, email support@tbx.report within 30 days. Unused pack credits are refunded within 30 days of buying the pack, at the price you paid per credit.
Can't I just ask Tesla whether a used car has free Supercharging?
No. Tesla's support page says: "If you are not the vehicle's owner or a registered driver, we cannot provide that information." (tesla.com, read 3 September 2026.) The seller is not neutral. The Factory Report says whether the car can have it and how likely it is.
What are SC01 and SC05?
Both mean free unlimited Supercharging. SC01 is tied to the car and normally passes to the next private owner. SC05 stays with the original owner. Neither code guarantees it is active today. Tesla can remove it, for example when a car passes back through Tesla. On the seller's laptop, open the car's page in their Tesla account, then its picture in a new tab. If the address lists SC01, free Supercharging is tied to the car.
Is the recall list definitive?
No. NHTSA lists recalls per model and year: some cover only certain cars, and some may already be done. Enter the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see which are open on that car.
I'm selling. Is this for me too?
Yes. Put the report's permanent link in your listing: buyers see the factory record from the source, and the Supercharging question is covered before they ask.
What can Tesla's record not tell me?
Mileage, battery health and accident history. Tesla's record shows some later changes, such as a replaced pack, but not all.
Accounts and credits
Is there a free Factory Report?
Yes, one per account: sign in with Google and use it on any VIN. If Tesla has no record for that car, you keep it for another. No account is needed to check a VIN or buy a report by card. The free report, credits and Pro need one.
What is a credit?
One credit is one Factory Report, for any Tesla VIN, so you can run reports without entering a card each time. Packs make a report cheaper: 5 for $7.95 ($1.59 each, 20% off), 10 for $12.90 ($1.29 each, 35% off) or 25 for $24.75 ($0.99 each, 50% off). No subscription, and credits do not expire.
Checking many cars?
Email support@tbx.report and say how many.
Live Diagnostic (Pro)
What will Pro read?
Pack capacity from the battery management system, the odometer, charge level and pack temperatures from the car, plus Tesla's record for Full Self-Driving.
See a sample Live Diagnostic →
How do I get one?
Sign in, then enter the VIN and the owner's Tesla account email. Tesla emails the owner an access request; once they approve, you pay $9.99 or 10 credits and the car is read. Nothing is charged before they approve.
Which cars can it read?
Every Model 3 and Model Y gets the full reading, and Model S and X from spring 2018 should too. Older ones on the first-generation computer get a shorter report, free. The car needs mobile signal; an asleep car is woken.
Privacy and data
What do you store?
For a report: the VIN, Stripe's payment reference and the email you gave at checkout. For an account: your Google email and name, and your credit history. No card details and no IP addresses. The privacy page lists everything.
Can my report be found by search engines?
Reports live at private links that tell search engines not to list them. Share a link only with people you want to see it.
Who runs Tesla VIN Report?
One person, Dan M. I built it and answer support@tbx.report myself, usually within a day. Include the VIN, or for credits the email you sign in with.
Are you affiliated with Tesla?
No. Tesla VIN Report is independent and not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to Tesla, Inc.
