Buying a used 2022 Tesla Model 3: what to check

What a 2022 Model 3 was built with, from Tesla's record and NHTSA: Autopilot and media computers, battery, Supercharging, warranty and recalls.

The short answer

A 2022 Model 3 was built with Autopilot hardware 3.0 (HW3). Any free Supercharging on it was the first owner's and ends with them, so expect pay-per-use. Ask the seller to open Controls > Service > Battery Health, though an August 2025 update removed that test from many newer cars. Tesla's record for the VIN settles the hardware for one car, and the free check here reads it; the Supercharging code is in the $1.99 report.

Autopilot hardware and Full Self-Driving

A 2022 Model 3 was built with Autopilot hardware 3.0 (HW3).

In April 2026 Tesla said Hardware 3 cannot run unsupervised FSD, and that customers who bought FSD would be offered a discounted trade-in or a computer and camera upgrade. It has published no prices or dates, nor whether a later owner qualifies. Since July 2026 Tesla has been releasing a reduced version, FSD v14 Lite, to Hardware 3 cars.

Tesla's record shows whether Full Self-Driving was bought (APPF) and whether it is active (APF2); APPF next to APFB means it was bought and is no longer active. The car's own Software screen shows what it has now. Since February 2026 Tesla sells Full Self-Driving only as a subscription, which ends with the seller.

The media computer

It has an Intel Atom media computer or, on cars built from about December 2021, an AMD Ryzen one. On cars built from late 2021 Tesla's record names it: VC00 is Intel Atom, VC01 is AMD Ryzen.

Parking sensors

It was built with ultrasonic parking sensors (US01 on the record).

Battery and range

Tesla added a battery health screen (Controls > Service > Battery Health) with software 2025.8. Ask the seller to open it: a green box means the pack holds what Tesla expects for its age and mileage, though it measures stored energy only, not damage. Software 2025.26 removed the test from many newer cars and left some older ones showing only their last result, so if it is missing, compare the range at a full charge with the EPA range when new, which fueleconomy.gov lists by version.

If the record lists BTF1, the pack is LFP, which has its own charge limits: Tesla's manual says to follow the daily and trip limits on the car's Charging screen.

Battery warranty

It was sold with Tesla's battery and drive unit warranty: 8 years from first delivery (or first use, if earlier) or 100,000 or 120,000 miles depending on the version (Long Range, Premium and Performance versions usually get 120,000), whichever comes first, with at least 70% of the battery's capacity retained, as Tesla publishes the terms in September 2026. Whether any is left depends on the delivery date and the mileage.

Supercharging

Almost every Model 3 carries SC04, pay-per-use. Free Supercharging from a referral or a promotion has usually been for the first owner only (SC05): it ends when they sell and does not pass to the buyer, though Tesla's app shows it the same way as the kind that does.

Fast charging away from Tesla's network

Before you buy, check whether it can fast-charge away from Tesla's network: Controls > Software > Additional Vehicle Information > CCS and 3rd-party NACS DC Fast Charging Support. Enabled means it can (CCS stations need an adapter); Not enabled means it needs a hardware retrofit, and the Tesla app shows whether one can be booked; Not compatible means it cannot.

Recalls

NHTSA lists 18 recalls for the 2022 Model 3. Each covers only the cars named in it, so some may not apply to a given car, and some may already be done on it: enter the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see which are open. Recall work is free. The list below is NHTSA's, as read on 5 October 2026.
