Model S steering rack bolt recall bulletin SB-18-32-002

On 2012 to 2016 Model S, corrosion can weaken the power steering motor bolts. What Tesla's recall bulletin covers, its labor time and how to check a VIN.

The short answer

On Model S of model years 2012 to 2016, long exposure to corrosion can weaken the bolts that hold the power steering motor to the steering rack. This is a recall bulletin, so the work is free: Tesla replaces the five bolts and seals them with wax, or replaces the rack if a bolt is already damaged. NHTSA's recall is 18V204000, and nhtsa.gov/recalls shows whether it is still open on a VIN.

What to ask the seller

Enter the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. If 18V204000 shows as open, the work has not been done, and Tesla does it free. If it does not show, the repair was done or the car is not covered.

The free check shows how many service bulletins NHTSA has for a car's model year, from its VIN. The $1.99 Factory Report lists them, each with a link to the bulletin. For a 2012 to 2016 Model S or Model X, the $4.99 Service Report goes through each one for that car: whether its build date falls in the bulletin's window, and Tesla's labor time for its build.
